The Nokia 3310 Re-released: A “Dumbphone” in a Smartphone World

The New Nokia 3310 was re-released recently and has a bit of deviation from the original full specifications.

Nokia made its official announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday that it will re-release the legendary but now new Nokia 3310 phone. The classic phone is now 17 years old as of its re-release, since it was first sold in the year 2000. The original Nokia 3310 sold around 120 million units globally before it was discontinued 12 years ago in 2005.

The re-release of this “dumbphone” is a bold but strategic act for Nokia as it is already the era for smartphones. However, it is a smart move on the part of HMD Global, which acquired the Nokia assets from Microsoft and got exclusive global rights (excluding Japan) to the Nokia brand on mobile phones and tablets for the next 10 years, in partnership with Foxconn, for its manufacture.

HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela announced, Apple-style, “and one more thing — I almost forgot”, the re-release of the Nokia 3310.

Aside from the new Nokia 3310, HMD Global presented three new smartphones, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 which will sell for different prices.
